How is it going with meeting up with your Michigan Revealed work groups?
Find a time to meet before our class this Friday. Remember to decide on your three images before you meet with your group members. Bring them in a file so that you can begin organizing them and deciding on text (and possible audio, etc). By class, the project should be well under way. We will have some class time to work in small groups. I would also like to use some class time for one or two groups to volunteer to show their works-in-progress for feedback from the whole class. By workshopping a particular project, we should shed light on questions and choices each group will be examining.
If you are looking for a place to meet, remember the Media Center collaboration rooms as an option.
To prepare for our next class discussion, write a brief post responding to these two clips by photographer Finbarr O’Reilly called “Embedded in Afghanistan” that ran on Reuters in February 2011 (a year ago!). The first is a photo essay with text. What story is being told? How are the captions working along with the images? Could the images stand alone?
Now view the second–by the same photographer–using interviews and other audio: embedded-in-afghanistan What story is told here? What do you notice that is the same in both narratives? What is different? What effect does the audio have?
Here is an expanded version of the story and images featured in December by The New York Times if you are interested in seeing a more recent update.
Thanks again to Roxanne for the use of her photo.
Folks, don’t forget to comment on the four photos (see previous posts)–I need your guidance to finish putting together our class’ Michigan Revealed.
